Black–body components in Gamma–Ray Bursts spectra?

چکیده
We study 7 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), detected both by the BATSE instrument, on– board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and by the Wide Field Camera (WFC), on board BeppoSAX. These bursts have measured spectroscopic redshifts and are a sizeable fraction of the bursts defining the correlation between the peak energy Epeak (i.e. the peak of the νFν spectrum) and the total prompt isotropic energy Eiso (so called “Amati” relation). Recent theoretical interpretations of this correlation assume that black–body emission dominates the time resolved spectra of GRBs, even if, in the time integrated spectrum, its presence may be hidden by the change of its temperature and by the dilution of a possible non–thermal power law component. We perform a time resolved spectral analysis, and show that the sum of a power–law and a black– body gives acceptable fits to the time dependent spectra within the BATSE energy range but overpredicts the flux in the WFC X–ray range. Moreover, a fit with a cutoff power–law plus a black–body is consistent with the WFC data but the black–body component contributes a negligible fraction of the total flux. On the contrary, we find that fitting the spectra with a Band model or a simple cutoff power–law model yields an X–ray flux and spectral slope which well matches the WFC spectra.

A Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei, Black Hole X-Ray Sources and Gamma-Ray Bursts
I consider models of active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass accreting black holes and microquasars based on a previously developed (Katz (1997)) model of gamma-ray bursts. When energy fluxes exceed a critical value ∼ 10 erg/cms, as in GRB, a black-body equilibrium pair plasma forms. At the lower fluxes found in AGN, BHXS and microquasars accretion power electrodynamically accelerates a small numb...
متن کاملScaling of Black Hole Accretion Discs from Gamma-Ray Bursts and Black Hole X-Ray Binaries to Active Galactic Nuclei
I consider how physical processes scale over eight orders of magnitude in black hole mass, from stellar masses in gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and black-hole X-ray binaries (BHXRB) to supermassive active galactic nuclei (AGN). Accretion rates onto stellar mass black holes range over more than sixteen orders of magnitude, from the lower luminosity BHXRB to GRB. These enormous parameter ranges correspo...
متن کاملRHESSI Tests of Quasi-Thermal Gamma-Ray Burst Spectral Models
Prompt gamma-ray burst spectra evolve on short time scales, suggesting that time-resolved spectral fits may help diagnose the still unknown prompt emission mechanism. We use broad-band gamma-ray data from the RHESSI spacecraft to test quasi-thermal models with high signal-to-noise time-resolved spectra of nine bright gamma-ray bursts. In contrast to results reported in more narrow energy bands,...
متن کاملThe Cooling Behavior of Thermal Pulses in Gamma-Ray Bursts
We discuss gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that have very hard spectra, consistent with black-body radiation. Several emission components are expected, on the basis of theoretical considerations, to be visible in the gamma-ray band, mainly non-thermal emission from cooling, relativistic electrons and thermal emission from a wind photosphere. We find that the pulses we study are consistent with a therma...
متن کاملTwo Classes of Gamma-ray Bursts
If gamma-ray bursts are at cosmological distances, as suggested by their isotropy on the sky and the comparative deficiency of weak bursts, then they represent radiated energies of ∼ 10 51 erg, and imply the release of an even greater energy. Only neutron stars and black holes have binding energies sufficient to power such extraordinarily violent and energetic events. General considerations of ...
